In fine art, a portrait is a form of representation of a person. Traditional portraits usually depict the sitter head-and-shoulders, half-length or full-body. Portraits include the conventional painting of an individual, a group portrait, or a self-portrait. Portraiture can tell us a lot about a person, but it can also capture an idea of who they are. Portraits by Van Gogh, Da Vinci, Rembrandt, and Vermeer are some of the greatest works of art ever produced.
The most renowned and prolific portrait artists include Pierre Auguste Renoir (French, 1841 -1919), John Singer Sargent (American, 1856 -1925), Sir Joshua Reynolds (British, 1723 -1792), Sir Godfrey Kneller, BT. (British, 1646 -1723), Thomas Gainsborough (British, 1727 -1788), Alexei von Jawlensky (Russian, 1864 -1941), Anthony van Dyck (Belgian, 1599 -1641), Ilia Efimovich Repin (Russian, 1844 -1930), Sir John Lavery, R.A. (Irish, 1856 -1941), Amedeo Modigliani (Italian, 1884 -1920), among others.
